Following the Macro Tutorial, we had a Macro Critique evening. Three RPS members provided commentary on the submitted images, there is no scoring, and other members are free to enter the discussion. Remember that the general rules of composition still apply such as leading lines and rule of thirds. Remove any distracting elements in the background or bright spots in the image. Expose for the brightest part of the image and use the shadows tool to bring up the detail in the darker areas. Depth of field is limited in macro photography so be sure the focus is on the element of most interest, for example bug eyes. It's ok if the focus falls off toward the edges of the photo. It was clear that lessons had been learned from the tutorial, all images were indeed macros or close-ups that could have been submitted in competitions.
